The Whiteboard app for the iPad has many uses.  Hear how, Ms. Thut, uses the app in her science class.

Flipgrid allows for questions to be written by the instructor.  Below is a question that I wrote.  I was able to create a video board of responses.  The board can be public or private which is password protected.

Students or teachers can respond in a simple video format.  First they must provide a snap shot of themselves.  After that, they allow the program to use their camera and record their response to the question.

The final piece is the moderation.  The instructor can watch the videos prior to them being available for others to view.  Once approved, members who have the password to the video response board can watch other members responses.  They may then "like" the video.  The responses can be sent out as a link, embedded, tweeted or sent to Facebook.

All of the videos can be placed separately or as a continuous slide show.

Google Forms can be used for so many purposes in a teacher's classroom.
Google Forms now allows for images to be included in the form.  This may be great for
  • Pictures of lab equipment to identify parts
  • Analyzing math problems that may or may not be correct
  • Labeling/Analyzing parts of animals
  • Writing prompts from fantastic pictures

One of the best aspects of being a technology integrator occurs when a teacher implements a technology tool that I present during a Lunch N' Learn.

Yesterday, Mrs. Kim Noe, high school English teacher, utilized the perfect tool, VideoNot.es to play on her SMARTboard for assessment.

View how she used it!

Quizdini provides a unique feature in that a teacher can create an explanation of the concept tested/reviewed in the the question.  A paragraph or link can be inserted.

Quizdini can be great for...
  • Interactive Whiteboard Activity (buttons are large, readable)
  • Whole Class
  • Groups

Today, Mr. Rodal set up his Google Voice account in under 15 minutes.  His thinking was to create a different tool for students to reflect on readings that occur in his history class.  Setting up a Google Voice account allows for connection to our school phones.  Also, most students have cell phones with them and can reflect during class or after school.  We will also be able to set a deadline for the assignment as each voice mail is time stamped.  In addition, and probably the great addition, Google Voice will transcribe each message.  This way the instructor can listen or read the response.  Furthermore, the teacher can click on the TEXT link under the transcribe voice mail and send the student a quick text message to the phone in which the original student message was sent from.

Now that the initial set up and brainstorming has taken place, I can't wait for the implementation with students.  Hear from Mr. Rodal on how EASY the process was!

Our anatomy teacher wanted all of the students' Skitch images in one place so that he could evaluate them.  He chose Dropbox.  He created one username and password and a few folders for the entire class to use.  A positive about Dropbox is that it can link and unlink with the iPad with ease.

See the process.

This idea came to me this morning.  Create an assessment using Explain Everything.  It's Pythagorean Theorem which always works better with real pictures.  Upload to YouTube. Create Google Form for completion by student.  Embed all into classroom blog.

The whole process took less time than copying and pasting into a paper copy.

Seriously, Awesome!

On a side note, student walked into class today with a broken arm.

The arm he WRITES with...

No problem with the iPad Whiteboard app...

Finally, when the class is over I simply change the blog post to "Revert to Draft" and it is removed from my blog.  Students are absent, when they return I will "Publish" it again.  EASY!!!

I've always struggled with the best way to provide positive, individual feedback for assessments.  For the most part, students complete assessments quite well.  With the four or five students that struggle, giving them positive, constructive feedback is crucial.

Today, I created a video that discussed in detail steps to solve particular problems from the assessment.
I used SMARTboard notebook software, Camtasia, and a mouse.

Students watched at their own pace.  After they changed the answers on their paper, I conferenced with them individual about specific questions pertaining to the concepts.

I believe this to be a better method than large group discussion with all 26 students.  It doesn't force students who understand the concepts to view demonstrations of information they already know.

Students created an Explain Everything production based on the mathematical terms from our recent unit of study.  Having the Explain Everything app in the students hands again worked wonderfully.  As we have used it in Social Studies quite extensively, the learning curve for the tech tool was zero!  This allowed for the students to dive right into creating.

I am amazed at how engaged the students are while performing this task.  I asked numerous students whether they liked this or if they felt it was a waste of their time.  All of them said they liked it.

I did assess them on their knowledge of the information.  This will be included with their written assessment as a final evaluation of their knowledge from Chapter 7.

After students complete the creation, they will be emailing me the production.

As the video states, I will either need to open these email files with a Mac or use a video converter as the files do not have sound on a PC.

After the students emailed me their movie, I downloaded all of the productions.  With YouTube's uploading ability of more than one video in a single click, the whole process did not take long.
Student videos are included...
