Saving video to an iPad from Google Drive was not possible until I found a solution courtesy of one of our IT people, @kenwestphal.

Collaborating with multiple students on different iPads or taking video with an iPhone or iPod was a difficult task because the Google Drive app only allowed downloading of images for use in iMovie.  Using the G Drive (Green) app now allows for videos to be imported into iMovie once the video is uploaded to a student's or teacher's Google Drive account.

If students are recording video using an Android device, the video will need to be converted before G Drive will import it into iMovie on the iPad.  We use Any Video Converter.

The Trading Card activity was taking to a level by Mrs. Brylski that actually had the students print the Trading Cards and trade!

Impact On Students:
Creativity:  Students needed to decipher the information that should be placed for each question.
Collaboration:  The discussion that incurred during the trading of cards was pretty in depth.  Some great feedback was provided for each student by each student.

A teacher recently sent me this:
I was wondering if you knew of any apps for students to create scenes?  Students have written stories in Jenny's class and we were thinking they could illustrate a story/plot outline of five scenes (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution).  I threw out a couple examples, one using Google drawing and another using a free Photoshop type program that I have installed in my lab (Serif), but was wondering if you knew of another program for iPad or web-based.

iPad Options:
  • Book Creator for iPad: Illustrate pictures or add photos--combine with text or having the pictures standing alone creates a great book

Web Options:
  • Google Draw: if you are a GAFE, this may be THE option.  It's located in your Google Drive. Create a Google Doc, a page for each drawing, and insert a drawing on each page.
  • Draw.io: Looks like Google Docs, connects with Google Docs! Insert picture and annotate it.  Drag and drop numerous figures and add to them. Search images and drop them into your drawings.
  • Draw Island:  Free, numerous drawing options, download images, no username needed
Impact On Students
  • Creativity: Students connect the words from their stories with images.  They create the images completely on their own.
  • Critical Thinking: Students must determine the level of clarification that their drawing will relate to their writings.  Some students may work to make the drawings completely clear, others may decide to make the drawings more abstract and left to interpretation.

  • sharable

I also added this to the "Creation Apps on iPad".

Sure, there are plenty of movie creating apps and web tools that teachers can use, but there are not many with a 5-10 minute learning curve with so many options!

iMovie on the iPad is the option for quick, effective, and stunning video productions for staff and students.  Today, a teacher shared with me her first iMovie on iPad creation.  The one minute movie provides a great audio, visual, and text description of her students' learning experience with oil spills and there clean up!

Thank you, Mrs. Wojcik for showcasing the wonderful, learning opportunity through an iPad creation app.

Mr. Mentink, the Writing In The Workplace teacher, asked me how he could enhance a traditional poster learning activity with technology.  The result is an engaging one and a half days of learning that previously occurred over four to five days.

See how PicCollage enhanced and empowered the students in the educational experience.

Through a Lunch N' Learn, Piktochart became the go to tool for creating an infographic on a world language.  Mrs. Brylski chose Piktochart because of the ease of use and its potential for creativity.

In the past, Mrs. Brylski had students create advertisements for a beverage to be sold in a European country.  Students would use Microsoft Word or Publisher and the cut and paste method.  The final products would be placed into plastic sleeves in a binder.

Since we don't have Microsoft products, we needed a different method.  We decided that Pic Collage would be a great alternative because it provides layering, cropping of imported pictures, text, stickers, and multiple exporting options!  We did need to incorporate the Skitch app as we experienced a better paragraph writing experience.  We simply exported the Skitch creation to our camera roll.

Combine that with the Google Drive app to share the final products with the teacher and a real marketing person, the students are experiencing an authentic learning experience.

As a completion to a "I am a Doctor and developing a Case Study" to present at a Symposium, we used a Google form to gather all of the web links of online created pieces of information.

This was the follow up to these processes!

I supplied four web creation tools & five iPad creation tools that students can use to create Problem-Based Learning outcomes.

Today, students worked on this.

A teacher wanted to know more about Sliderocket.  Below you will find complete details of all the features.

Very important aspect of using Sliderocket with students is to use the EDU account.  See how...

SlideRocket Player will allow for you to view a presentation from your iPad.  Connect your iPad to a digital projector via wireless or wired for all to see.  I will have my iPad with the presentation next to the teacher and the computer that they will be using.  Great reminder to show all tools in an organized manner.

When I coach football, we always talk about "It's not what the coaches know, it's what the athletes know."

I think the same holds very true when formulating a plan to integrate technology into a teachers classroom content.

I have really grown to like using flowcharts for deciding when and how the technology is integrated.  Creating boxes with concepts and tools along with dates and responsibilities creates a seamless educational environment that the teacher can understand.

This is a flow chart which demonstrates the final creation of a two week unit which provides research for a symposium that the students will conduct.  SEE ENTIRE PROBLEM BASED INFORMATION

After discussing the information, the teacher and I determined the best process for the students to create and share.

See the pictures of the end product!  (Always take pictures with your iPad!)
The red writing is the expected dates.  The green writing is the process and tool. (some computer/some iPad). The Blue initial is the the responsibility.  Who is going to complete what!

The last aspect is the use of a Google Form to collect all of the creations from the students. VIEW IT!  As a #techcoach I always enjoy showing how to make a form, but actually creating the form.  This is an easy way for me to take some work from the teacher while still having them understand the concept.  Eventually, I will have them create it.

Simply Phenomenal!

Some of the social studies teachers, Mr. Krause, Mrs. McCumber, and Miss Wilcox wanted a tool to help record 1920 radio shows.  Students were to write a script which was derived through research on topics that were presented to the students.

Initially the teachers were going to use Audio Memo to record the radio spots and then upload them to Google Drive.  While the free version allows for recording, it does not allow for uploading to Google Drive.

I suggested SoundCloud as another alternative because I felt that the iPad app was quite user friendly, and I liked how all the radio spots were placed into one website type page.  Teachers created classroom accounts.  Since the free version only allows for 120 minutes of recording, teachers used Gmail accounts to create SoundCloud accounts based on class hours.  After the class hour, teachers changed the passwords to the class accounts.

We were also able to meet standard number 1 of our ITLS standards as it was a new digital creation.

Some fantastic radio spots were created:

Audio Memo could be a viable option for recording voice only productions with students.  The real benefit of this (paid) app is the integration options with Google Drive.

View the process.

On a side note, because this is a paid app and the free app only allows sharing via email, we have chosen to set up classroom accounts using soundcloud.com. This is a free option which allows for recording & uploading via the iPad app.  See/Hear example

More to come on that when implemented with students next week.

Hearing that "Book Reports" or "Book Reviews" from students to a class and or a teacher, provided inspiration for thinking about iPad apps that could be great support for a book review.

Reading books is still an important part of a student's learning process.  Use these seven options for students reviewing books.  Many of these options allow for students to produce a product to the camera roll.  Sharing it is as easy as sending it to the students' Google Drive.  See the presentation.

I like these apps because it provides a way to culminate a unit or brainstorm ideas.  Students can also take pictures of their work completed on paper or in other learning atmospheres and develop them into beautiful visually appealing creations.  These apps can also be used to get people's attention.  They are eye catchers!

Something exciting happened today.  Students who had multiple experiences using the iPads to record video footage while using iMovie recorded a Hunger Banquet that was occurring with a group of students.  Not only were the students using the technology without any instructions, the teachers thought about and planned for the students to record the event.

Thank you to Mrs. Stainton and Mrs. Brylski for providing a real, thought provoking, learning experience.
