If you are a reader of this blog, Evernote on the iPad and on a computer, has become a great "saving tool".  Recently Evernote made an update to their Web Clipper Chrome Extension which falls under "the many uses of Evernote".

In order falls the alerts, reminders, and screens that I received when using the Web Clipper Extension for the first time today.

The clip below shows how Evernote has incorporated some of the great features of Skitch into their Web Clipper app!

Mr. Rodal began using Evernote after a December 11, 2012 Lunch N' Learn.  After five months of using the tool for his online database, he explains a number of reasons for his success that may encourage other teachers to implement Evernote into their classroom learning environment.

The recent interview with CEO Phil Libin from Evernote provided some great insight into failure!  It wasn't until the 6:00 minute mark of a 7:44 interview that a blog post was born.

Mr. Libin explained:
"What's holding back entrepreneur in other countries is that they have a much less healthy attitude toward failure. It is seen as a much more permanent thing.  One of the great things America does right is we kinda celebrate it.  Failure becomes a good story.  As long as you haven't failed for something stupid.  As long as you've learned something and can demonstrate what you learned.  It's kinda celebrated.  It's healthy."

If I would have turned it off while he was talking about the design and where the company was going, I wouldn't have heard these powerful words.

So many times in education, whether it be from internal or external forces, we are taught that "failure is not an option."  In actuality, Mr. Libin's comments resonate that it is an option, as long as "it's not for something stupid."

Can we as parents and students, educators and administrators, accept this concept of failing?  Failing to the point where it drives us to learn something with a greater intent, create a better product, collaborate more openly, think more critically, and be more creative. This will push all of us to move past the failure into success.

Head Coach Bill Self recently stated after a loss by his basketball team that they were "the worst team ever at Kansas"

Failure.

Last night, they demolished their instate opponent, Kansas State!  Coach Self stated, "We have been so bad for about a week, but the guys showed up (tonight)."

Success.

Please allow your son/daughter, student, colleague, or yourself some failure.  Let's not "beat each other up or ourselves" for failure.  Let's not accelerate to "Defcon 5" Let's determine the path that will be needed to get back to success.  Let's celebrate it!

As long as it's not for stupid stuff.

Writing a paper for a problem/solution topic in English starts with great research.  To be efficient, today our students used Evernote and the web clipper.  Because students are working with partners, we were able to share a notebook.

See how it was done.

One of the great reasons for using Evernote with students came to light TODAY!  Our students were not able to use a computer lab.  Only the iPads were available.  With ease, the Evernote app was utilized on the iPad.

We also introduced students to TrapIt! which is an extremely efficient search engine.  Type what you want to search and instantly TrapIt! aggregates all information pertaining to a topic.

The integration with Evernote comes with one tap of a link.

See how it worked!

After a Lunch N' Learn about the Whys of Evernote, Miss Tubbs decided that Evernote would be the best tool for collecting and organizing resources for a problem solution paper.

It was important to have students acquire the correct tools in the correct order.

TrapIt! has been a game changer in helping me find resources for staff.

Tuesday, September 4, 2012

I have seen a number of references for IFTTT, pronounced LIFT without the L, and decided to investigate.  One of the challenges of a #techcoach is finding resources that will be beneficial for teachers and then ORGANIZING them.  Organizing them to the point that they can easily be accessed in the future.  Teachers provide learning targets and content, #techcoach es provide resources.

First, a person needs to create an IFTTT account.  Took me seconds.  Then a TRIGGER needs to happen. This means that IF This Happens, Then That (Action) should take place.  I am utilizing Evernote for organizing of all resources.  One major reason is that when I Google something, I have my Evernote account as a resource that should be searched as well.  See how to set this up!  More Info From iPad Today!

See the video on how to set up a Trigger!  Happy organizing!

Have you experienced this?

See nine updates ready for you in the Apple App store, click Update All, enter your password and watch the downloads begin.  The excitement builds and then it happens...

You forget why you were so excited to update it in the first place!

Because of this, I have started to create Evernote notes that include iPad screen shots of updates the developer is touting.  Examples are below.

Creating this organizational tool has allowed me to take advantage of the updates.  Otherwise, I would really not remember or act on the updates that are free!  Give it a try!

As my first edCamp got underway, I somewhat had an idea of what an edCamp is.  After experiencing it, I now know.

Educators.Relaxed.Collaborating.Learning.

Four fellow teachers joined me that really haven't been exposed to technology as much as maybe other people.  It was a thrill for them to become so excited about the format (relaxed) and the learning that they experienced.  We had a multiple hour conversation after the conference and really became excited about what can be incorporated. Awesome!

My personal experience was fantastic!  Meeting people from twitter was one of the best aspects,. but other aspects of the day rocked as well.

There are so many great options for the schedule, that it is always difficult to choose.

I decided to attend the Evernote, iTunes U, and Tech Coach Sessions.

Evernote: We discovered that we could make a class account and had many people using the account on iPads at one time.  Updating and adding to a note worked flawlessly.  We talked about the benefits of Evernote over other options, due to the ability to upload everything: words, pictures, videos, links, audio.

iTunesU:  This was really an introduction to what iTunes U is.  I enjoyed learning about the "Beyond Campus" and "K-12" section.  I added

  • AP European History  (For introduction to our high school AP teacher)
  • TED Education Creative Problem Solving
  • Google Apps in the Classroom
  • Apps for the Classroom
  • On The Road To Implementation Common Core with Common Sense
  • Common Sense Ending Cyberbullying and Online Cruelty
I will be share the iTunesU resource with our teachers some time during the year as a Tech Tool Tip.

Tech Coach:  Discussed strategies for teaching teachers technology.  We focused on
  • ISTE standards
  • How to move the non users in our district to users
  • Offerings of teaching tech in our district, learning at different times (Learn @ Lunch)
  • How we obtain our resources, Twitter, Google+, Facebook, ZITE app
  • How we save the resources we find, Evernote, Google Docs, Diigo, all over the place :)
Overall, the day was fantastic and many resources were obtained!

Our tech director would like to incorporate this edCamp idea into a day of professional growth for our teachers in our district.

We can...more details to come!
